Dermal Fillers

As we age we are not able to produce as much hyaluronic acid or collagen as our body needs. Dermal Fillers contain hyaluronic acid similar to that made by the body and replace that lost due to the ageing process. They can also treat fine lines and wrinkles.

Dermal Fillers

+ What is it?

As we age, the amount of hylaluronic acid – one of the substances that adds volume to the skin – depletes and the body is unable to replenish the same quantity or quality. In addition, there is resorption of the underlying bony structure and the loss of fat pads creating a ‘perfect storm’ where everything slides south. Dermal Fillers contain hyaluronic acid similar to that made by the body and replace that lost due to the ageing process. They also can treat fine lines and wrinkles.

+ Treatment areas

Treatment is frequently used in the following areas:

  • Lost facial volume
  • Marionette lines
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Jowls
  • Misshapen lips
  • Jaw definition
  • Receding chin
  • Saggy ear lobes
  • Ageing hands
  • Acne scars
  • Wrinkled decolletage

+ Is it for me?

Almost anyone can be treated with fillers. If you are pregnant, breast feeding, undergoing IVF or suffer with an Immuno-deficient condition or cancer then it is not advisable.

+ Is it safe?

Dermal Filler placement must only ever be administered by a medical Professional who has been trained. It is not safe in the hands of an unqualified practitioner. Bruising and a small amount of swelling is normal. There is always the slight chance of infection but close adherence to post-procedural advice will dramatically reduce this from happening.

+ Procedure

After a thorough consultation and medical history, consent is obtained and a date booked for the procedure. Most fillers contain a local anaesthetic so they can be injected directly once the surface of the skin has been prepared using an anti-microbial cleanser. Only FDA approved products are used. Effects can be seen immediately and the complete effect in 2 weeks. Treatment lasts for 6-18 months depending on where it is placed and the type of Dermal Filler used. There may be a slight discomfort during the procedure but this is only mild.

+ Aftercare

Do not touch or massage the area for at least 6 hours post-procedure as there will have been multiple injection sites that are a potential site for infection. There may be some redness, bruising and swelling which will settle down over 7-10 days. If you develop a temperature or persistent pain and swelling, it is very important to contact your Practitioner. Avoid sunbeds, skin peels and laser treatments for up to 2 weeks.

+ Downtime

There may be some bruising and swelling immediately after the procedure. Bruising usually resolves within 7-10 days depending on the site and the size of the bruise. Swelling after most Dermal Filler placement settles after 24 hours but may take longer in lips.

+ Other Treatments

Other treatments that complement Dermal Fillers include Profhilo, PDO Thread Lifts, Wrinkle-Smoothing Treatments, Micro Needling and Skin Peels.
